National Gun BuyBack Day
12/3/11
Dr. Michael Hirsh, President of the WDMS
and Co-Director of the Injury Free Coalition (IFC) of Worcester, is
leading an effort to have the IFC
(43 sites nationwide)
coordinate efforts to do a National Gun Buyback modeled after the
very successful Worcester Goods for Guns Program that has collected
2064 weapons from Central MA in the previous 9 years. Each year's
Buyback costs, yielding over 200 weapons, has been less than the
cost of caring for a single gun shot wound victim in the hospital
setting.

Humanities In Medicine
Founded in 2002 as a collaborative project of Worcester District
Medical Society, Worcester Medical Library, and the Lamar Soutter
Library, the Humanities in Medicine at the University of
Massachusetts Medical School was created as a resource of books,
films, events, and presentations for faculty, staff, students,
patients, and visitors. The HIM initiative has been developed by the
committee representing members of the UMass community committed to
promoting a greater awareness of the value of the humanities in
health care, medical education, and biomedical research. |
